I had to turn around and go back for a second look after glancing and thinking the hole looked a bit different than usual.
The colder conditions predicted for the upcoming week may push more owls to use cavities for roosting and give me a few more opportunities to share an image or two.

I stepped to the side of the building to take the call and noticed the ornamental Pines against the building. A quick scan (a habit that has gotten me many a weird look over the years....:) and voila, my early Xmas present! Thanks Santa!!
It's About Time....I managed to see 2 Screech Owls on Sunday, a red and a gray. The first of the day was sunning itself along the road in West Newbury with lots of small birds for company.
We've had a spectacular influx of winter finches across the country this fall with 300 - 400 White-winged Crossbills settling into the pines at the Salisbury Beach State Reservation. Hopefully loads more to come from this location this late fall and winter.
A visit to Salisbury Beach State Reservation on Monday, November 12, 2012 found 300 or so White-winged Crossbill foraging in the Pines around the campgrounds. Among them were at least 3 Red Crossbill, one of which, a male, can be seen below.

A return visit on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 armed with my cell phone and the knowledge that the flight call of a Red Crossbill could id it to type found me roaming the campground for a short while before I managed to record the brief 3 second flight call which can be heard below.

I pulled over to watch it for a bit only to have it disappear behind a port-a-potty.... I walked over and found this drain pipe a few feet off of the ground (just left of the port-a-potty). The swallow flew from the pipe as I rounded the corner.
I could hear young begging from the nest which was a foot or so into the pipe. I decided to leave well enough alone and come back every few days to see what transpired. Well... about a week later I found the youngsters at the edge of the pipe with the parents ferrying food to them at a pretty good rate. Here's one of the youngsters waiting for it's next meal to arrive.

Hidden in plain sight in the center of Amesbury, MA is a wonderful little waterfall created by the waters of the Powwow River and formerly used by the surrounding mill buildings.

One of the items you walk by on your way to the waterfall is this 6' tall tribute to Amesbury's own Al Capp, creator of the Li'l Abner comic strip. More information on Al Capp here

I spent a bit over an hour trying to find the best angle through the fence on the pedestrian foot bridge over the river. The image below was shot a just over a full second to create the smooth look to the water.

I've had my share of squirrel problems over the years and currently use baffles either on the tree or pole the box is mounted on with varied success and additional cost. I plan to try a pair of Scott's boxes, one with the slotted opening and one with the 3" round opening in the woods behind the house and am looking forward to reporting the results! I had another one of these last week and for the second time in all these years I had a Hummingbird expire in the yard. Very, very sad to see.

I came home to a Hummingbird hanging from the feeder with another male displaying to it from a few inches away, trying to chase it from "His" feeder. This is what it looked like when I arrived.

Back in July of 2010 I had another male showing the same symptoms, having a hard time swallowing, sitting on the feeder for extended periods of time with it's bill straight up in the air and eyes closed as if resting until being chased off by another male. This shows the tongue out as it tries swallowing hard.

And a brief video of the 2010 male as it tried to feed at the window feeder.

Both of these Hummingbirds were collected and given to the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology in Cambridge to add to their collection. I've asked several sources for a diagnosis of the problem and have heard from others that have seen the same behavior at their feeders but have yet to hear a viable reason. I do know that male Hummingbirds live an "average life" of 1 1/2 years with females living longer, so maybe with all of the time I've spent watching I've just witnessed the end for a few of these flying wonders. Sad indeed.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06577956936202098727noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2975617599658604274.post-88984094401994917512012-05-21T20:10:00.003-04:002012-05-25T07:22:15.232-04:00Recent Odds and Ends

Returning home from a slow day of birding I came across this dark eyed owl sitting directly across the street from the house.

I've heard Barred Owls calling around the house through the years but hadn't seen one during the day until today.

A Cape May Warbler has chosen to winter along the coast at Odiorne State Park in Rye, NH. It's been there for a few months and seems to be doing quite well as it chases down the numerous brine flies that reside in the wrack line. It's relatives are wintering in south america, a few thousand miles south of here and many degrees warmer.

A couple of Owls made their way in front of the lens today. The 1st is one of the Screech Owls I've seen at this location for a few years running.

The 2nd, a Snowy Owl, much larger and more entertaining as it flew from perch to perch on a few occasions.

and in flight....
February 05, 2012

A pair of Peregrine Falcons are once again nesting, or are in the beginning stages of nesting, in the Ayer Mill Clock Tower, the world's largest mill clock tower, along Merrimack Street in Lawrence, MA. Here's the male as he chased a few pigeons around the tower.

The tower, seen below, has hosted a pair of nesting falcons for several years now. I've had the pleasure of photographing a few of the young from this nest in recent years. The male can be seen on the weather vane along with the placement of the nest box.
